HCOP Ambassador Program Session 2 - Financial Aid and Financial Literacy

On Saturday, September 26th, 2020, HCOP participants delved into all things financial!

The session began with financial aid presentations for the High School and Undergraduate students, organized in partnership with the EducationQuest foundation. During these workshops, students learned the ins and outs of scholarships, grants, and student loans. Special attention was paid to the FAFSA application for high school students, as the FAFSA for 2021-2022 opens on October 1st.

Meanwhile, HCOP health professional students participated in a workshop with Dr. Kosoko-Lasaki, MD on the topic of Negotiating Contracts and Salary. Students gained useful knowledge in areas such as employment contracts, salary and benefits discussion, and other related topics that are key to graduating new health professionals - but that are not always discussed in the regular school curriculum.

The final event of the day was a workshop on financial literacy. Students learned the basics of budgeting and the importance of understanding credit scores. The students were given the opportunity to ask questions about credit cards, bank accounts, and more. Students were also introduced to EducationQuest’s Reality Check, an online tool designed to help students understand the cost of living in relation to their desired career.

Financial matters are considered a part of the "hidden curriculum" that comes with the college and professional realms. Thanks to Dr. Kosoko-Lasaki and the EducationQuest foundation for helping to ensure HCOP participants are prepared for a bright future!
